The cast of the show The New Normal: Andrew Rannells, Justin Bartha, Ellen Barkin, Nene Leakes and Bebe Wood for Vogue [Oct 2012]

*Just caught up on the first three episodes
First impression. It’s amazing what shows can get away with these days. Of course it’s all relative to the culture we live in, but when a bigot grandmother can sling around jew jokes within the first couple minutes of a show, you know things have changed.
The New Normal follows a single mother who decides to become a surrogate for a gay couple looking to start a family. So far the standout character for me is “Shania Clemmons,” played by Bebe Wood (girl on the ladder). She plays the daughter of the single mother, and is pretty hilarious in a knows-way-more-than-she-should-for-her-age kind of way.
Not to make comparisons, but I will, LGBT advocates will appreciate that the gay couple has a pretty forward kissing scene pretty early on in the show. I mention this, because one of the funniest shows on television (Modern Family), caught flack because its two main gay characters, had gone more than a season without sharing on onscreen kiss. Once again, this just goes to show the climate of the television industry.
Anyways, I plan on keeping up with this show and see how it fares the fall season.
