Disney’s newest princess, Sofia, is Latina — and is already the source of controversy. The problem is, the Latina Princess bears no distinct Latina features. And her voice is done by a non-Latina actress, Ariel Winter of the hit comedy “Modern Family.”
“Sofia is Latina. It’s sort of a matter-of-fact situation rather than an overt thing,” executive producer Jamie Mitchel said during a press tour this week.
Disney made big deals of promoting its other non-white female protagonists, including Mulan, Pocahontas, and Tiana, the first black princess.
“But with Sofia, it’s like, ‘Oh, by the way, she’s Latina. That just doesn’t make any sense. It really bothers me,” said Lisa Navarrete, spokeswoman for La Raza, a Hispanic advocacy organization.

I’m sorry Disney, but this is embarrassing. You took a step forward with your first black princess, and now this? As much as I love Ariel Winter in Modern Family, I’m sure they could have found an actual Latina girl to do the voice. And yes it’s called acting, but had you hired a white actress to do the voice of the black princess, you would have been fucking slammed with controversy.
