20 MINUTES OF DELETED SCENES FROM “THE MASTER”
Anyone who watched (and re-watched and re-watched) the trailers for “The Master” knows that writer / director / superhero Paul Thomas Anderson shot a whole bunch of footage that didn’t quite make its way into the theatrical cut of the film. A few months after “The Master” made its initial splash, PTA presented the film at LACMA alongside a 20-minute reel of deleted scenes, which he had cut together into a nicely paced and fully scored assembly. The reel was included as a bit of bonus material on the DVD and Blu-Ray (in stores now), and now — inevitably — it has made its way onto YouTube.
The reel is a treat for fans of the film, and perhaps even more essential viewing for those who were frustrated by the beguiling bromance between WWII vet Freddie Quell and neo-mystic religious figure Lancaster Dodd. And be sure to stick around for the whole thing, as the package ends with a “blooper” from the famous Processing scene, a fit of uncontrollable laughter that reveals just how fluidly Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman were able to slip in and out of these indelible characters.

THE MASTER Press Conference | Festival 2012
Definitely going to have to rewatch this film when it’s released later this month. Now that I have taken in the acting, I can pay attention to the finer details. I keep hearing the discussion about scientology, but I don’t understand why people are so quick to try and place a face so to speak to the religion in the film. As an atheist, I think it’s irrelevant.
I don’t even know where to beging with this film. If I’m being honest, I will definitely have to give it a second watch.
I will say though that it did mirror a lot of the central themes that were seen in “There Will Be Blood.” The obvious one being religion.
One part that doesn’t require a second watch though, is the phenomenal acting and directing. If I was going to pick between Jaoquin and Philip, I’d have to give my Oscar vote to Philip. Both were superb, but something just really resonated with Philip Seymour Hoffman. And as far as the directing goes, chalk another one up for Paul Thomas Anderson.
*Such an exciting TIFF12 day
Cannot believe I’ll be seeing The Place Beyond the Pines, followed by The Master.
I don’t think it can get any more perfect than that.
*Definitely one of my most anticipated films of the festival
Can’t wait to see it the way it was meant to be seen aka 70mm
I just have to make sure I lineup at Roy Thompson Hall early, to make sure I get amazing seats. From what I’ve heard, it can be make or break, and I would hate to have the viewing spoiled by poor seating. But obviously I’m not one to shy away from an early lineup.
And to think that only an hour later, I’ll be watching The Place Beyond the Pines.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
*70mm for the win
I’ve never actually watched a film in true 70mm format. Of course I’ve seen films in IMAX, but IMAX is 70mm in a vertical format, while original 70mm films are horizontal. I know from time to time 70mm films are shown at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. Most notably are 2001: Space Odyssey and Ben-Hur. What it all comes down to is, aside from what I’m sure will be an amazing film, the quality is going to be perfection.
Movie Trailer of the Day: The first full trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams. It’s scheduled for an October 12th release, unless someone at the Celebrity Centre steals all the prints.
*Then there’s this trailer.
Obviously coming out in the fall. Has Oscars written all over it. Never enough trailers.
Excited to see what Paul Thomas Anderson brings to the table of There Will Be Blood.
